Located near Omonia Square, the hotel places guests within walking distance of many of Athens’ most popular attractions. We found it easy to reach the Acropolis, Plaka, Mars Hill, and several other areas we wanted to revisit before flying home. The location made an excellent base for squeezing a few more experiences into the final days of our trip.

The moment we stepped into the “lobby,” it was clear that Moxy targets a different audience than the traditional Marriott properties where I often stay. The space was energetic and colorful, with bold décor, contemporary furnishings, music playing in the background, and guests gathering around communal seating areas. Check-in (at the bar) took only a few minutes, and we were greeted with a welcome drink while the friendly staff got us settled.

Our room continued the same modern theme. Like many city-center hotels, space was at a premium. The room was compact, though thoughtfully designed to maximize every available square foot. The industrial-inspired décor, open storage concepts, USB charging ports, and other technology-focused features gave the room a distinctly contemporary feel.

While the room was certainly smaller than many of the hotels we stayed in throughout Greece, it worked well for a short stay. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, which offered pleasant relief after spending so many days walking through archaeological sites and city streets. Each evening, we returned tired from exploring Athens and had no trouble getting a good night’s sleep.

Breakfast was served in the hotel’s communal lounge area, which doubles as a café and bar throughout the day. The food was good, and the coffee helped fuel our final sightseeing adventures. The atmosphere, however, reflected the hotel’s social concept. The space was lively and energetic, with guests constantly moving through the lobby area. While some travelers will likely enjoy that environment, I found it a bit chaotic during the morning rush. Finding a quiet corner to enjoy breakfast required a little patience. This is not definitely for everyone.

The staff consistently stood out throughout our stay. Everyone we encountered was welcoming, helpful, and genuinely enthusiastic. Their energy fit perfectly with the hotel’s overall personality and contributed to a positive experience from arrival through checkout.

In many ways, Moxy Athens City served as an interesting contrast to the rest of our trip. Much of our journey focused on ancient history, traditional culture, and historic accommodations. Moxy represented the modern side of Athens: youthful, energetic, and forward-looking. My biggest complaint was probably the elevators, which were narrow, slow and often cramped. We used the stairs when we didn’t have luggage to tote.

While I enjoyed the experience, I also confirmed something about my own travel preferences. The hotel delivered exactly what it promises: a stylish, social, contemporary atmosphere in a convenient location. For travelers who enjoy that environment, it is an excellent option. Personally, I tend to prefer more traditional Marriott properties with quieter common areas and a slightly more conventional hotel experience.

That said, I would still recommend the Moxy to many visitors, particularly younger travelers or those looking for a lively base from which to explore Athens. It provided a comfortable and convenient conclusion to our Greek adventure, and it gave us one last opportunity to experience another side of this fascinating city before heading home.

Located just below the Acropolis, Mars Hill is a relatively small rocky outcrop that many visitors pass without fully appreciating its significance. Yet this modest hill has witnessed some of the most important moments in both ancient Greek and early Christian history. It also offers some of the best views in Athens.

Our first visit came shortly after arriving in the city. The climb itself is brief, though the polished stone can be surprisingly slippery. As we made our way to the top, the city gradually opened up around us. The Acropolis towered above, while modern Athens stretched endlessly in every direction. It was one of those places where the view alone would justify the visit.

What makes Mars Hill special, however, is not simply the scenery. For Christians, the site is best known as the place where the Apostle Paul delivered his famous sermon to the Athenians, recorded in the Book of Acts. Standing where Paul addressed the city’s philosophers and civic leaders nearly two thousand years ago was both fascinating and humbling. His message about the “unknown god” was delivered to a society deeply immersed in philosophy, religion, and debate. Looking out across Athens, it was easy to imagine the challenge he faced introducing a new faith to one of the intellectual centers of the ancient world.

My wife was particularly drawn to Mars Hill. There was something about the atmosphere, the history, and the views that resonated with her. In fact, she enjoyed it so much that we returned for a second visit after coming back from Crete. Not many places make us feel compelled to visit twice during the same trip, but Mars Hill managed to do exactly that.

From the summit, the views are spectacular. On one side, the Parthenon rises above the Acropolis, a powerful reminder of Athens’ golden age. On the other, the modern city spreads across the valley, illustrating how Athens continues to evolve while remaining connected to its ancient roots. The contrast between these two worlds was one of my favorite aspects of the site.

As we explored the hill, I found myself thinking not only about Paul but also about the countless Athenians who gathered here long before him. In ancient times, the Areopagus served as an important meeting place where civic leaders debated legal, political, and philosophical matters. The same rocky surface beneath our feet once hosted discussions that helped shape Athenian society.

A multilingual plaque commemorates Paul’s sermon, providing context for visitors from around the world. Nearby, ancient stone steps carved directly into the rock reveal how people once ascended the hill centuries ago. Walking among these remnants creates a tangible connection to the past that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Like many areas of Athens, Mars Hill also bears some of the marks of modern urban life. Graffiti appears in places where it feels somewhat out of place against the historical backdrop. Fortunately, it does little to diminish the significance of the site itself. The history remains far more powerful than the spray paint.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was taking time to wander down the hillside after leaving the summit. Along the slopes are scattered remnants of ancient foundations and ruins, subtle reminders that history extends far beyond the famous monuments that draw most visitors. Some of the most interesting discoveries in Athens came from simply slowing down and paying attention to what was around us.

Our visits to Mars Hill offered an opportunity to connect with ancient Greece, early Christianity, and the countless generations of people who have stood on that same rocky hill overlooking the city. For anyone visiting Athens, Mars Hill is well worth the short climb.

Whether you come for the history, the religious significance, the panoramic views, or simply a quiet place to reflect above the city, it is a site that leaves a lasting impression long after you descend back into the streets below.

At first glance, the site feels somewhat unexpected. Modern traffic moves around it on the surrounding roads, while archaeological excavations expose layers of history beneath and around the church itself. Rather than standing isolated from the modern city, the monastery exists alongside it, creating an interesting contrast between present-day Heraklion and the many civilizations that have occupied this spot over the centuries.

As we explored the grounds, it became clear that this was far more than a single historic building. Archaeological excavations reveal remnants of earlier structures, courtyards, and foundations that hint at the site’s long and complicated history. Some of what remains is the result of natural disasters, including earthquakes, while other sections bear the marks of conflict and destruction. Walking among the exposed stonework felt like looking through a window into different eras of Crete’s past.

The church itself dates to the period of Venetian rule and is considered one of the island’s most important surviving examples of Gothic architecture. While much of Crete’s history reflects a blending of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences, Saint Peter and Saint Paul offers a particularly visible example of those overlapping cultural layers. The structure has undergone numerous changes and restorations throughout its long history, yet it retains a sense of dignity that reflects its importance as a religious center.

Inside, the atmosphere was calm and reflective. The elegant stone arches and architectural details spoke to the craftsmanship of those who built it centuries ago. Unlike some of the larger and more famous religious sites we visited, this church felt intimate. It invited visitors to slow down, look closely, and appreciate the history contained within its walls.

A little bit of quick research revealed how the church evolved through successive periods of Venetian, Ottoman, and modern Greek rule. Like many sites in Crete, its story mirrors the story of the island itself. Different cultures arrived, left their mark, and eventually passed on, but pieces of each remain visible to this day.

One aspect of the visit I found particularly interesting was how the excavated grounds revealed history literally beneath our feet. Throughout our travels in Crete, we repeatedly encountered evidence of civilizations layered atop one another, from the Minoans at Knossos to the Venetian fortifications in coastal towns. Saint Peter and Saint Paul offered another example of that pattern, with centuries of construction, destruction, and rebuilding visible in a relatively compact space.

Just beyond the church, the waterfront and nearby fortifications provided additional reminders of Heraklion’s strategic importance throughout history. The combination of religious architecture, archaeological remains, and coastal scenery made this stop far more interesting than I had anticipated. The cars buzzing past on either side of the site added an interesting dynamic.

By the time we left, I found myself appreciating the monastery not only for its architecture but also for the stories that were layered beneath us. For visitors to Heraklion, the Monastery of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is well worth a stop. Its combination of historical significance, archaeological interest, and peaceful atmosphere offers a rewarding experience for anyone interested in exploring the layers of Crete’s remarkable past.

Located between Heraklion and Chania on Crete’s northern coast, Rethymno is often described as one of the island’s most beautiful towns. After spending a day there, it was hard to disagree. The combination of Venetian architecture, Ottoman influences, seaside views, and a vibrant local atmosphere made it one of our favorite stops during our time in Crete.

We began our visit in the Old Town, where narrow cobblestone streets twisted between colorful buildings, hidden courtyards, and small shops. Like many European (as well as North African) cities, some of the best moments came simply from wandering without a plan. Every turn seemed to reveal something new. A small church tucked between buildings. A shaded square filled with locals enjoying coffee. A shop selling handmade crafts or local specialties. The town felt lived in rather than staged for tourists, which made exploring even more enjoyable.

Rethymno’s layered history was evident everywhere we looked. Elegant Venetian doorways stood alongside Ottoman-era balconies and minarets, creating an architectural blend that reflected centuries of changing rulers and cultures. The Venetian Loggia and the Rimondi Fountain were particularly memorable reminders of the town’s prosperous past under Venetian rule. Yet what I enjoyed most was simply walking the streets and taking in the atmosphere rather than checking landmarks off a list. This included taking a pass on hiking up to the Ventian Fortezza, opting instead to relax with coffee while doing some “people watching.”

Eventually, we found ourselves along the Venetian harbor, one of the most picturesque areas in town. Fishing boats bobbed gently in the water while restaurants and cafés lined the waterfront. The scene felt relaxed and inviting, encouraging visitors to slow down and enjoy the moment. The old lighthouse stood watch at the edge of the harbor, providing a reminder of Rethymno’s long maritime history.

For lunch, we found a nice restaurant wandering through the labyrinth of streets. Fresh seafood dominated many menus, though I opted for chicken. Regardless of what was ordered, the combination of good food, sea breezes, and ancient architecture created the kind of meal that becomes more memorable than just good food.

One of the highlights of the day came from something I hadn’t expected. While exploring the town, we stopped at a local baklava bakery where we were treated to a demonstration of the process. Watching the bakers work with enormous sheets of dough was fascinating. Their skill and precision transformed what seems like a simple pastry into something far more impressive. Of course, after watching the process, purchasing some baklava for the road felt almost mandatory. It was every bit as delicious as it looked.

Experiences like that bakery visit are often what sticks with me most from traveling. Historical sites help me understand a destination’s past, but it is often the people, food, and craftsmanship that help me connect with its culture in the present. Watching local artisans practice skills passed down through generations provided another glimpse into the traditions that continue to shape life in Crete today. The baker pictured above brought his craft from Turkey. We consumed his story with the same eagerness we had for the hand-crafted treats.

By the end of the day, Rethymno had left a strong impression on us. It managed to balance history and modern life in a way that felt natural and authentic. The town’s Venetian elegance, Ottoman influences, beautiful harbor, and welcoming atmosphere combined to create a destination that was both fascinating and relaxing.

For anyone visiting Crete, Rethymno deserves a place on the itinerary. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, food, shopping, or simply spending a day wandering beautiful streets by the sea, the town offers a little bit of everything. More importantly, it offers an opportunity to experience the character of Crete itself, where centuries of history continue to blend seamlessly into everyday life.

This often causes individuals to perform flattened, comfortable versions of themselves.

Ultimately, Kay Fabella’s Edgewalkers Collective operates as both an intellectual field report and a restorative community. As we approached the monastery, the setting alone was impressive. Rolling hills stretched into the distance, and the stone walls of the complex seemed to emerge naturally from the landscape. The atmosphere was calm and reflective, a stark contrast to the dramatic events that unfolded here more than 150 years ago. The centerpiece of the complex is the monastery church, built in the sixteenth century. Its ornate façade blends Venetian and Byzantine influences, reflecting the many cultures that have shaped Crete over the centuries.

Like many of the places we visited in Crete, Arkadi offered more than architecture and history. It provided another opportunity to better understand the people who call this island home. Arkadi added another layer to my understanding of Cretan culture by demonstrating the fierce independence and resilience that have become central to Cretan identity.

As we explored the grounds, our guide recounted the events of November 1866, during the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule. Hundreds of Cretan rebels, along with women and children, sought refuge within the monastery’s walls as Ottoman forces surrounded the complex. Faced with overwhelming odds and unwilling to surrender, the defenders made a decision that would forever change the monastery’s place in history. When defeat became inevitable, they ignited the gunpowder stores housed within the monastery, killing many of themselves along with their attackers rather than face capture.

The story is tragic, but it is also deeply woven into the cultural memory of Crete. What happened at Arkadi transformed the monastery into a symbol of resistance and sacrifice, not only for Cretans but for people throughout Greece and beyond. Standing in the very place where those events occurred made the story feel far more real than simply reading about it in a history book.

One of the most moving parts of our visit was seeing the preserved remnants associated with the siege. The monastery museum contains artifacts, historical documents, religious items, and exhibits that help tell the story of both the monastery and the revolt. These displays provided valuable context, helping us understand the broader struggle for independence that shaped modern Crete.

Yet despite its history, Arkadi does not feel somber. The monastery remains an active religious site, and the peaceful courtyards, gardens, and stone pathways create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. As we wandered through the grounds, it was easy to appreciate both its spiritual significance and its role in preserving the memory of those who came before.

What struck me most was the contrast between the tranquility of the monastery today and the violence of the events it witnessed. Birds sang in the trees, visitors spoke quietly as they explored the grounds, and sunlight illuminated the stone buildings. It felt less like a battlefield memorial and more like a place of reflection, where history is remembered without overwhelming the present. The ubiquitous cats also seemed content to find me and nuzzle me any time I sat to rest.

Our visit to the Monastery of Arkadi provided insight into the character of the island and the determination of the people who fought to preserve their identity and freedom. For anyone visiting Crete, Arkadi is well worth the journey.

Located in the countryside outside Heraklion, Keramion Pottery is both a workshop and a showcase of traditional Cretan craftsmanship. As soon as we arrived, it was clear that this was more than a souvenir stop. The pottery on display reflected generations of artistic tradition, blending techniques that date back to ancient times with the creativity of modern artisans.

As we explored the workshop, we learned about the process of transforming simple clay into beautiful finished pieces. Watching skilled craftspeople shape and decorate their creations gave us a new appreciation for the patience and expertise required. What might appear to be a simple bowl or vase on a store shelf achieved added meaning when we understood the time, skill, and artistic vision behind it.

Many of the designs drew inspiration from Crete’s long history, incorporating motifs that could be traced back to the Minoan civilization. After visiting the Palace of Knossos and learning about the importance of pottery in ancient Cretan life, it was fascinating to see how those artistic traditions continue today. The connection between past and present felt tangible. Rather than existing only in museums, these ancient influences are still alive in the work of contemporary artisans.

Most memorable, however, was the opportunity to meet the people behind the craft. Travel often feels most authentic when you can speak with someone who is passionate about preserving a tradition. Their pride in their work was evident, and their willingness to share both their knowledge and their creativity made the experience far more memorable than simply browsing a gift shop. It reminded me that culture is not something frozen in history. It is carried forward every day by people who continue practicing and preserving these skills.

Of course, we spent time admiring the finished pieces as well. The variety was impressive, ranging from practical household items to intricate decorative works like their colorful hot air balloons. Each piece felt unique, reflecting the hand of the artisan who created it. In an age when so many products are mass-produced, there was something refreshing about seeing objects made with such care and individuality.

By the end of our visit, we left with a greater understanding of a historic facet of Cretan culture. Experiences like this are one of the reasons I enjoy traveling. Whether through food, art, music, or craftsmanship, they offer a window into the lives and traditions of the people who call a place home.

I read article on Knossos recently, and it brought back some great memories. Located just outside Heraklion, Knossos was the political, economic, and ceremonial center of Minoan civilization. As we approached the site, it was easy to understand why it has captured imaginations for centuries. The ruins stretch across a vast area, and even today the scale of the complex is impressive. Standing among the remnants of this Bronze Age city, it was remarkable to think that people were living, governing, trading, and worshiping here more than 3,500 years ago.

One of the first things that stood out was how different Knossos feels from many of the Greek sites we visited later in our journey. Instead of marble temples and classical columns, Knossos reflects an even older world. The palace was a maze of courtyards, staircases, storage rooms, workshops, ceremonial spaces, and residential quarters. Our guide explained that archaeologists believe the complex contained more than 1,000 rooms. Walking through its winding corridors, it became immediately clear how the palace may have inspired stories of a labyrinth.

The restored sections of Knossos helped bring the site to life. British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans led the excavation and reconstruction efforts in the early twentieth century. While some historians debate the extent of his restorations, there is no denying that features such as the Grand Staircase and the distinctive red columns help visitors visualize what the palace may have looked like during its height. Rather than staring at foundations and scattered stones, we could begin to imagine a vibrant center of power bustling with activity.

The Throne Room was one of the highlights of our visit. Though smaller than I expected, it remains one of the most iconic spaces in the palace. The ancient alabaster throne still occupies its original position, surrounded by decorative frescoes and ceremonial seating. Standing in the room, it was easy to imagine the rituals and gatherings that once took place there. Whether it served a king, a priestess, or another ceremonial function remains a topic of debate, but the space still carries an undeniable sense of significance.

Throughout the site, the frescoes provided some of the most vivid connections to Minoan life. The famous Bull-Leaping fresco immediately caught our attention. The image depicts athletes vaulting over a charging bull, an activity that seems equal parts sport, ceremony, and daredevil performance. We also saw reproductions of the Prince of the Lilies and other colorful works that reveal a society deeply connected to nature, ritual, and artistic expression. The bright colors and fluid designs feel surprisingly modern despite being thousands of years old.

Another memorable stop was the Queen’s Megaron, famous for its dolphin frescoes. The graceful marine imagery offered a reminder of how important the sea was to Minoan culture. Crete’s location made it a center of Mediterranean trade, and evidence of that prosperity appears throughout the site. The attention to detail in the artwork and architecture reflected a civilization that was sophisticated, creative, and remarkably advanced for its time.

Of course, no visit to Knossos would be complete without discussing the myths that surround it. According to Greek legend, King Minos ruled from this palace and ordered the construction of a vast labyrinth beneath it to imprison the Minotaur, the half-man, half-bull creature eventually slain by Theseus. While there is no evidence that an actual labyrinth existed beneath the palace, wandering through the complex makes it easy to see how the story emerged. The interconnected rooms, multiple levels, and seemingly endless passageways create a setting that feels perfectly suited for myth.

Even more impressive than the mythology was the ingenuity of the Minoans themselves. Knossos featured advanced drainage systems, sophisticated water management, and even what could be considered early flushing toilets. For a civilization flourishing during the Bronze Age, these innovations were extraordinary. The site offers countless reminders that the ancient world was often far more advanced than we tend to imagine.

Knossos offered something different from the classical Greek ruins that dominate many travel itineraries. Here, we encountered a civilization that predates much of what we typically associate with ancient Greece, yet clearly helped shape the culture that followed. The Palace of Knossos is an essential stop if you visit Crete.

Whether you are drawn by archaeology, history, mythology, or simply curiosity, the site offers a fascinating glimpse into one of the Mediterranean’s most influential ancient civilizations. Located near the waterfront in Heraklion, Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa (A Little Wine, A Little Sea) combines excellent food, friendly service, and beautiful views of the water. The setting alone makes it worth a visit. Tables overlook the sea, and the sound of the waves provides a relaxing backdrop that feels distinctly Mediterranean. It was the kind of place where lingering over a meal felt natural.

From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome. We were shown to a table with a view of the water (although it was getting dark) and given plenty of time to browse the menu. Before long, we received an unexpected dinner companion. A friendly cat appeared from seemingly nowhere and decided the area beneath our table was the perfect place to spend the evening. He remained there for much of our meal, occasionally checking in to see if we planned to share any of our dinner.

We started with an order of fried zucchini, which arrived in a bowl so large that it could easily have served as a meal on its own. The crispy slices felt bottomless. We made a respectable effort, but it quickly became clear we were not going to finish everything. Alongside it, we enjoyed a traditional Cretan salad loaded with fresh vegetables, local cheese, and excellent olive oil. Like many of the best meals we had in Greece, the ingredients were simple, but the quality made all the difference.

For our main courses, I ordered the grilled pork chop while my wife selected the seafood linguini. Both dishes arrived looking more like family-style platters than individual entrees. The pork chop was flavorful and perfectly cooked, served with potatoes and rice (enough food for two people). My wife’s seafood linguini was equally impressive, packed with seafood and rich flavor. Had we known the portion sizes in advance, we probably could have ordered one entrée and shared it. Despite our best efforts, there was simply no way to finish everything.

Just when we thought the meal was over, the restaurant brought out complimentary dessert. Fresh donuts topped with ice cream appeared at the table along with glasses of rakomelo, the traditional honey-infused spirit. The warm sweetness of the rakomelo paired perfectly with the dessert and provided a memorable ending to an already excellent meal.

What stood out most about Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa was how effortlessly it captured the spirit of Cretan hospitality. The food was abundant, the prices were reasonable, the service was warm, and the setting by the sea was hard to beat. While not the best meal we had in Crete, it was amazing. If you find yourself in Crete looking for fresh flavors, waterfront views, and portion sizes that border on comical, Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa is well worth a visit. Just arrive hungry.

Our first impression was overwhelmingly positive. The lobby struck a balance between modern style and understated elegance, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the moment we walked through the door. Check-in was quick and efficient, and the staff immediately made us feel at home with their friendly and professional service.

Our room was spacious and thoughtfully appointed. The bed was comfortable, the furnishings were modern, and the room provided everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Small touches, such as complimentary bottled water and in-room coffee, added to the sense that guest comfort was a priority. After long days spent exploring Crete, it was a pleasant place to return to each evening.

One of the highlights of our stay was the breakfast buffet. Each morning offered an impressive selection of fresh and locally sourced options. Traditional Greek pastries sat alongside fresh fruit, cheeses, breads, eggs, and a variety of other breakfast staples. The quality was excellent, and the staff kept everything well stocked even during the busiest periods. It quickly became one of our favorite parts of the day.

Although the hotel is not located directly in the center of Heraklion, we found the location worked very well for us. The walk into town was straightforward and took us through a pleasant park that provided a nice break from the urban landscape. Attractions such as the Venetian Harbor, Koules Fortress, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum were all easily accessible on foot. At the end of the day, being slightly removed from the busiest tourist areas made the hotel feel even more relaxing.

Galaxy Hotel delivered many of the amenities and touches you would expect from a luxury property while maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Everything felt well maintained, and the staff consistently went out of their way to ensure guests had a positive experience. The comfortable accommodations, standout breakfast, friendly service, and convenient location made it an ideal base for exploring Heraklion.

That connection came through dinner at Peskesi Restaurant, a dining experience that felt less like a meal and more like an introduction to the culinary history of Crete. Located in the heart of the city, Peskesi has earned a reputation for preserving traditional Cretan cuisine, and after one evening there, it was easy to understand why.

From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere set the stage for something special. The restaurant occupies a beautifully restored building with stone walls, exposed wooden beams, and warm lighting that creates an inviting, rustic feel. We were seated in the enclosed outdoor dining area, a comfortable space that blended the charm of an outdoor courtyard with protection from the evening weather. The staff welcomed us warmly and immediately made us feel at home.

Before our meal even began, we were treated to a small complimentary appetizer, a tradition that seemed common throughout Greece but was executed particularly well here. It was a simple gesture that reflected the restaurant’s hospitality and set the tone for the evening.

We started with several traditional Cretan appetizers, each showcasing the fresh ingredients and bold flavors for which the island is known. The standout among them was a fig salad that was both hearty and flavorful. Fresh ingredients, local cheeses, and a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors made it one of the most memorable salads we enjoyed during our time in Greece. Like much of the menu, it highlighted the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing ingredients from local producers and its own organic farm.

For my main course, I ordered the Syglino pork chops. When the dish arrived, it immediately demanded attention. Four thick pork chops were served over a bed of glowing charcoal, filling the air with an irresistible aroma. The meat was tender, flavorful, and expertly prepared. Accompanied by fresh vegetables, it was one of the best pork dishes I have ever eaten. The portion was generous enough that my wife and I could easily have shared it as a meal.

My wife chose Kreokakavos, a traditional dish with roots that stretch back centuries. The recipe is referenced in Deipnosophistae, a third-century work that preserves many aspects of ancient Greek food culture. The dish combined pork, honey, thyme, and a legume puree into a rich and satisfying meal that perfectly balanced sweet and savory flavors. Like my pork chops, the serving size was substantial and could easily have fed two people.

By the time dessert arrived, we were already impressed, but the meal continued to deliver. We enjoyed a semolina-based dessert that was simple, comforting, and deeply satisfying. It was accompanied by a traditional digestif, providing a perfect conclusion to the evening. While I cannot recall the exact name of the dessert, it seemed entirely in keeping with Peskesi’s philosophy of celebrating traditional recipes and local ingredients.

One aspect of the restaurant that particularly impressed me was its commitment to the farm-to-table concept. Peskesi operates its own organic farm outside Heraklion, supplying many of the ingredients used throughout the menu. A map of the farm is displayed in the restaurant, reinforcing the connection between the food on your plate and the land from which it came. The restaurant even offers farm tours for visitors interested in learning more about traditional Cretan agriculture and food production.

Throughout the evening, the service was exceptional. Our servers were knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. They happily explained the history behind various dishes and offered recommendations without ever making us feel rushed. Their passion for Cretan cuisine added another layer to an already memorable experience.

Dinner at Peskesi was one of our favorite meals in Greece. Beyond the excellent food, it offered a deeper appreciation for the traditions, ingredients, and history that define Cretan cooking.
